7 things you should know about….DIGITAL STORYTELLING

This article located at www.educause.edu/eli from the EDUCASE Learning Initiative discusses the seven important factors to reflect on when considering Digital Storytelling.

The seven important factors include; What is it?, Who’s doing it?, How does it work?, Why is it significant?, What are the downsides?, Where is it going? And what are the implications for teaching and learning?

The article begins with a Scenario discussing a particular sociology student, and the way in which he chooses a topic to create a digital storytelling about. It informs the reader of the factors he considered to put in his digital storytelling, as well as how creative one may be when creating one.

The first important factor which the article goes on to discuss is discussing what storytelling is. “Digital Storytelling is the practice of combining narrative with digital content” (www.educause.edu/eli ) it explains that the resources used to create a digital storytelling is endless. It then discusses who is doing storytelling. Storytelling is widely used, and one of the earliest large-scale digital storytelling projects is sponsored by the BBC in “order to capture and share stories from around the United Kingdom that reflect different local histories and cultures” (www.educause.edu/eli ). The third factor talks about how it works, and makes note of the idea that anyone may create a digital storytelling, there is no technical background needed. This is very important for those students who are yet to be confident with technology. The next issue raised discusses the significance of digital storytelling. “The process of creating a digital story forces storytellers to choose a topic that can be appropriately conveyed to a particular audience, with electronic elements” (www.educause.edu/eli ). The fifth idea is the downsides of story telling. The main issue would include the importance of intellectual property, especially when incorporating things such as images, music or video etc. The next factor talks about where it is going, it is quite clear that just the idea of digital storytelling is advanced. Therefore the possibilities are truly endless, with regards to the ideas and resources which may be put into a digital story. What are the implications for teaching and learning? “Creating and watching digital stories has the potential to increase the information literacy of a wide range of students” (www.educause.edu/eli )

This article is very informative and a useful way of identifying and teaching people about the important ideas of Digital Storytelling.
