Digital Storytelling, Visual Literacy and 21st Century Skills

The article written by David S. Jakes and Joe Brennan discusses how Digital Storytelling may be used in the classroom. It is a very helpful article; especially for a teacher who may whish to bring in digital storytelling to their classroom. It is also beneficial for teaching purposes as it has an extremely step by step guide to building you r own digital storytelling program which is the clearest method and explanation I have seen.

This article discusses the many important ideas of Digital Storytelling, however one in particular is “What do students learn?” It states that the process of Digital Storytelling can provide a high-quality learning experience because the learning experience honors the writing process first. The inclusion of technology into the process represents a “value-added” approach where the inclusion of the technology extends the learning experience beyond what could be accomplished without technology. Although a students may be able to write a well structured and presented story, their stories my always be that much better with using technology.

“Imagine a learning experience, supported and extended by the application of technology, that empowers students to create and contribute, all within the context of what they are expected to know and be able to do in the 21st Century. Imagine that this learning experience provides students with a compelling and competitive voice and enlarges the boundaries of their ability to communicate, potentially to a worldwide audience. That learning experience is digital storytelling,”

I found this quote both inspirational and very encouraging. This article is a must have for teachers, and anyone wanting to use digital storytelling,

Digital storytelling does provide an appealing and very engaging learning experience. It brings together many different ideas of writing, technology and emotion. “The process of digital storytelling provides one of the best learning experiences available to students”.
